Bone Grafting In Boise & Meridian, ID

Tooth loss is a serious issue that affects every aspect of your life. To restore the functions of your mouth, your smile, and your quality of life, it is essential that you have your missing teeth replaced. One of the most popular treatments for replacing missing teeth is dental implants. This treatment involves the surgical placement of small titanium posts into your jawbone. These posts provide support for your new teeth.

The success of Dental Implants relies on the fusion of your jawbone to these titanium posts. If you do not have enough bone mass in your jaw, your bone may not be able to fuse properly, which can compromise the success of your treatment. At Treasure Valley Oral & Facial Surgery, we can help to increase the success of dental implants with bone grafting.

Tooth Loss and Your Jawbone

Your teeth play many important roles in your mouth. They are essential for biting and chewing. They control airflow when you speak. They also help to provide you with a gorgeous, confident smile. One of the lesser known roles of your teeth is the role they play in the health of your jawbone. Every time you chew, your teeth stimulate the bone. This stimulation tells your body to send essential nutrients.

After tooth loss, your jawbone loses the stimulation from the missing teeth. Because of this, your body mistakenly thinks that fewer nutrients are needed. Fewer are sent. As a result, your jawbone gradually begins to weaken, causing it to change shape. When this happens, your adjacent teeth can begin to shift out of place. The shape of your face may also be affected.

Your Jawbone and the Success of Dental Implants

Treatment with dental implants involves the surgical placement of small titanium posts into your jawbone. As you heal, your jawbone gradually fuses to these posts, a natural process called osseointegration. This process stabilizes the posts within your jawbone so that they can provide strong, secure support for your replacement teeth. If you have lost too much bone mass, the bone may not be able to fuse properly. This can result in loose implants and even implant failure.

What is Bone Grafting?

Before getting dental implants, a consultation is necessary to determine if it is the right treatment for you. During this exam, we also assess the condition of your jawbone. Just because your bone is considered too weak initially, this does not mean you cannot get dental implants. Instead, we can first restore the strength of your jawbone with a procedure called bone grafting.

Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that involves transplanting bone mass into the weak areas of your jawbone. The bone mass may come from your own body or a donor. As you heal from the procedure, your existing bone mass fuses to the bone graft material, restoring the strength of your jaw. Once you have healed from this procedure, we can then begin the process of placing dental implants.

Types of Bone Grafting

There are a few different types of bone grafts that may be performed. During your initial consultation, we can help to determine the best type to meet your specific needs.
•  Autograft. An autograft uses bone mass taken from your own body. With this type of bone graft, there is no risk of disease transmission or graft rejection because we are using your tissue. It does, however, require additional surgical sites.
•  Allograft. An allograft uses bone mass from a human donor. With this type of graft, you do not require an additional surgical site. The tissue is screened before use to reduce the risk of disease transmission and other complications.
•  Xenograft. A xenograft uses bone material taken from a non-human source. Typically, the bone mass is taken from a cow. The bone is processed at high temperatures to make it safe for use. This type of graft is often recommended when larger amounts of bone material are needed.

Our office also offers bone grafting related procedures which include sinus lifts, nerve repositioning, and more!

Bone grafting restores the strength of your jawbone, which then helps to improve the success of Dental Implants. For more information, and to find out if a bone graft is right for you, call Treasure Valley Oral & Facial Surgery today at (208) 343-0909.
