Who Needs an Apicoectomy Most and Why Do They Need It?
Posted on 9/7/2020 by Cole Anderson, DMD, MS
An apicoectomy is a procedure which serves as an alternative to extracting an infected tooth. It is generally only performed on a tooth that has undergone a root canal which has failed or did not completely take care of the issue. There are a number of reasons why this type of oral treatment may be necessary. But something else that should also be considered are some of the very serious conditions or occurrences that can take place as a result of an unattended tooth. When left untreated and ignored for too long, such worst-case scenarios can include developing a dental abscess, the onset of sepsis and even the formation of a brain abscess in the most severe cases! These are certainly not the kind of risks that you want to be leaving the door open to. Here is more about how an apicoectomy can help prevent these things:
How an Apicoectomy is Performed
The oral surgeon will make a very small and precise incision in the gum and remove the infected tissue, as well as a tiny amount of bone as to ensure the infection doesn't return after the area if filled with a dental cement to strengthen and reinforce its position in the jaw. The entire procedure takes around half an hour to forty-five minutes to complete, although the far back teeth, especially on the lower jaw, usually take a bit longer than the ones up front.
