Dental trauma occurs when you've been hit in the face. This can be any type of injury from sports to a vehicle accident. If you've suffered dental trauma, you need to have it looked at right away, even if it doesn't hurt that much and you believe it's fairly minor. Dental trauma can lead to a number of complications that you may not realize right away. Teeth Can Be Knocked Out of PlaceSome dental trauma is bad enough that it actually knocks out teeth, but sometimes it may not be that severe. Your teeth may be slightly moved out of position. This can be so minor you may not notice that your bite is changing until weeks or months later. However, the damage may be bad enough that your teeth come loose. Eventually, they may shift, leaving openings for bacteria to get into your gums and pushing the neighboring teeth around. You May Lose a ToothIf you've had a tooth broken or chipped, you may not think it's that big of a deal and put off making an appointment. However, it is possible that the damage will have affected the pulp and the root of the tooth. If you wait too long, we may have to extract the tooth instead of repairing it. You May Have a FractureYour jaw or other bone in your mouth may have been fractured by the impact. Sometimes, it's not easy to tell when a bone has been fractured, especially if you're dealing with other injuries. This is one of the reasons why it's very important to come in for a dental X-Ray after dental trauma. If you don't, the fracture may heal up incorrectly, which can cause a number of problems later. Any time you experience dental trauma, give us a call and make an appointment so we can examine your mouth to make certain nothing is damaged. |
